Applications

• Please read over all the rules and information before applying in order to minimize any confusion before joining.

• If applying for a character that has already been dropped, it would be a good idea, though not required, to know something of their previous interactions. You are also free to pick up a dropped character with no memories of their previous time in Mayfield.

• All content for the personality and sample entry in your app must be written or roleplayed by you; for the personality section in particular, we do not accept copied text from wikis or other sources. Obviously, you may not copy your app from other players, whether in Mayfield or other games. Application plagiarism will result in a ban from the game.

• If you wish for your character to be placed in a specific house, please mention this in the relevant section of the application and specify that permission was obtained by the PCs already residing in that house. We will be operating by the Honor System for this, and there is no need for others to comment their permission in this post!

• Other special requests would also best go in the beginning of the application. Remember, grammar and spelling are important -- if your app contains errors, you will be asked to revise.

• Please post all applications or canon updates in this post; posting them elsewhere and linking to them from here may cause them to get changed later. Posting them here keeps us from having to save them.

When Applying, Fill Out the Following:

When Applying for an Original Character, Fill Out the Following

• Before applying, please look over any applications that were recently accepted to get an idea of what we're looking for.

• If you apply for a character that has already been reserved, we will inform you and ignore the application until the reserve runs out. You may not apply for more than two characters from the same canon. For the sample entry, you may write your own entry, or use a post from a musebox, dressing room, or other game. We recommend [community profile] testrun_box if you prefer the latter!

• After you're accepted, please follow all of the instructions given. You will need to reply to the acceptance, post your journal to the friend add page and your canon post, join the communities, and use the friend add page to update your journal. Once you're accepted, please introduce yourself on the community when you're ready to play.

• If your app is "Pending", do not freak out! This means that we need you to make some revisions, and does not mean you're rejected. We generally give players a chance to revise before rejecting them, but we will reject apps that do not address the concerns stated when we asked for a revision. If you have been rejected, our reply will clearly state this to be the case. If we have not gotten back to you yet, under no circumstance does this mean you are rejected. If it has been over a week since our last reply, it would be a good idea to contact us with a reminder, otherwise, please be patient!

• If you have received a "Pending" notice, you will have one week to supply us with your revisions, or your reserve will be considered expired and that someone else is free to apply for the character.

• The typical wait for a reply on apps may be anywhere from a day to a little over a week. If any part of your application requires a pending, it may be another week after your reply to that before we can get to you. We process a high volume of apps every round, so please be patient.

If you have not heard back on a pending for over a week after apps close, please send a PM directly to the mod account.

APPLICATIONS ARE CLOSED.

Character Name: Tyve Russell-Rasmussen
Character Age: 20
Background: It started with a world. This world developed as worlds are wont to do. And it grew until it reached the point where technology blurred the lines of the divine and the mundane and men became like gods--Conquering the elements, the sea, the sky and almost everything between. But then something happened, a great cataclysm lost to memories of those no longer living, and the world plunged into a new dark ages. Despite that, there were some survivors. And those remaining clung on to life, salvaged what was left and rebuilt the world slowly. Of course it was never the same.

And as time marched on, those survivors died and most of the knowledge of the old world disappeared. Of course it's been said there were certain vestiges left, but it's been several centuries now the tales are no more then legend now. After all, even with the apex of technologies of the day such as engines, telephones and electricity, man still has yet to conquer the skies and sea.

Until one day.

Over one-thousand years to the day after the end of the cataclysm, a routine dig for ore uncovered the ruins of the world that was. It was the day the world began to change anew once more as more and more diggings started to take place. Practically overnight, technology began to not so much march forward as leap in great bounds.

But we need to take a step back and talk about Tyve. Fifteen years prior to this discovery, Tyve was born to a very well to do family. Her mother was from a minor aristocratic house and her father was a career military man with a long line of forebears (Some say even a general in the wild and early centuries following the cataclysm) for the country of Ascalon, a place known for its mountainous forests as much as its military power. She had a fairly normal childhood as an only child, wanting for nothing, receiving the best in education and lifestyle and with no great incidents to be had in her past. In fact she had decided to follow the military career path of her own father. After all, despite the fact of that peace had been long in the world, the military still had prestige to it.

At the age of thirteen, as was the custom for those in her world, she took the entrance exams for her chosen profession and was accepted at one of the most prestigious military academies in Ascalon. During her six year tenure here, with the finest minds of both war and peace, it was expected that she would learn to become a soldier. And after a rough first year, she adjusted to her second year, made friends and all was normal for the young girl.

Unfortunately, this was not to last. When Tyve began her second year, the first of the ruins of the world that was before were found. While most of the year passed by without incident, towards the end was a different story. By then several more ruins had been discovered and with it came conflict. After all, ruins did not discriminate between borders of countries, and while many countries were able to forge partnerships or compromises, there were just as many places where the dispute over ownership of certain ruins led to border skirmishes throughout. Ascalon was no exception. Bordered to the west by the country of Colada, there arose a dispute over a particularly large ruin between the two countries. Having never been in particularly warm terms with each other, it had only been a matter of time before their skirmishes escalated into something worse. No one is quite sure who was responsible for the idea, but it can only be presumed that one of the war council of Colada thought it to be prudent to not only demoralize Ascalon but to be rid of future leaders of their rival country. The strategy they chose was to attack the academy.

It was one warm afternoon in the spring that the plan was put into motion and a small but elite force of Colada’s soldiers attacked the academy. Students and teachers alike tried to defend their school, located remotely in the forests of Ascalon, but it was in vain and even as reserve forces arrived, it had been too little too late and the damage had been done. It was then that Tyve got her first taste of real war, watching her dearest friends being cut down and her attempts to avenge and save them resulting in a scarring on her face and soul. It would later be known as the ‘Massacre of Ascalon’ and the beginning of the War of the Ruins. The immediate aftermath left Tyve in shock for a few months, unable to comprehend the sheer loss. But she had always been a resilient girl and now was no different and she healed. Physically at least. It would still good while before the psychological wounds left her.

As time rolled on, the academy rebuilt itself and opened up its doors once more, despite the carnage that had happened only months before. Of course now, circumstances were different. With the finding of more and more ruins, the conflict between countries and the rise in technology was inevitable. But the world wasn’t the only thing that had changed. Tyve had as well and as she began her third year, in memory of her friends, she opted to forgo the path of a marksman in the Ascalon army and instead aimed towards the leadership track. And with a dogged determination she forged ahead on her new path, healing slowly from her emotional wounds as well, forging new friendships among her fellow survivors of the massacre, opening up a bit more, and generally becoming what was expected of her as someone aiming for a leadership position. And while the war waged on, its effects still very prevalent around and in the academy despite its mostly insular location, she learned and grew and excelled. And when she was 19, a fresh new graduate (with distinction) of the academy, she entered the field of war, not as a victim but as a soldier.

Despite the trauma she'd suffered only a few years ago and the extensive training she'd received, she still was taken by surprise on her first forays into the battlefield. The years had not dulled the wars around her and in fact many of the conflicts only intensified, in no small part because of the technology being uncovered on all sides. It seemed to the solider that every week brought a new change in strategy, a new way to have to adapt as more and more ancient technology was used on the field. And with it also, brought more countries into the initial conflict of Ascalon and Colada. Of course with that continuous flux in technology and manpower on both sides, she continued to lose people near and dear to her, though she was more accepting (though no less angered) of the casualties, having come to terms with her friends deaths in her last years in the academy. So in the midst of her first year, already experienced in battles and death, though by no means a hardened veteran, she continues on, hoping for an end to the fighting soon and perhaps a little revenge on Colada for all that's she's lost.

Tyve Russell-Rasmussen | Original Character | Not Reserved 2/2

[personal profile] notyetageneral 2012-08-03 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
Personality: Having been born in extremely well off circumstances and her world’s equivalent of high-society as well as being an only child, Tyve is used to being comfortable both materially and emotionally. This served to work against her in her youth, causing her to come off as frigid or even arrogant, and while those traits still occasionally manifest, for the most part all her time underfire has taught her to take a deep breath and think. Also having been blessed with a thicker emotional shell than most, she often comes off as exceedingly blunt, quite unforgiving in her assessment of people or their actions. Tact is still a bit of a rough issue with her even several years down the line.

Just because she can shrug off most things however, doesn’t mean that she’s exactly stoic. Far from it. She has plenty of pride in her abilities and has a low tolerance for it being insulted. When it comes to perceived slights to herself or those she cares about, Tyve has a temper that takes long to cool and the kind of stubbornness that won't back down from a fight or a disagreement. Though the years have tempered her fight a bit and it takes a bit more for her to be pushed, don't mistake it for being passive, she's still fairly young and she still has enough bite to her.

Thanks to her upbringing in a military household, Tyve does for the most part defer to authority figures, though generally anyone with a military background gets a free respect pass from her unless they do something she views as unbecoming. On the other hand, if she doesn't like what she sees in a civilian authority figure, she isn't afraid to speak up and rock the boat a bit. On the thread of military, there is an interesting contrast to Tyve. Owing to said upbringing, outside of her emotions, Tyve does try to keep things orderly and disciplined. Which she succeeds in...Except when duty may involve personal or emotional matters. Tyve tries to be disciplined in those situations as well, but still does struggle with her teenage issues of separating duty and her own personal emotions. She does have a strong sense of right and wrong but sometimes does choose to ignore it as her passions dictate. Her want for revenge for example in regards to Colada is something she knows may not amount to anything and possibly escalate situations but she still persists and presses forward at it.

Tyve was once quite humorless, never joking and rarely smiling. However, over the years she's learned to smile (and even laugh) a bit more and while she still maintains a very serious and driven sort of bearing, occasionally a dry and sometimes dark sense of humor will manifest itself.

Despite the years that have passed since the academy massacre, she still occasionally suffers nightmares and occasional pangs of survivor's guilt. Though most of the time she’s come to terms with most of it, it still sometimes manifests as doubts and worries. Though she would hardly be the first to admit it.

People wise, she still takes some time to warm up to people, but once she does, she tends to be loyal and steadfast. She is the kind of person will go out of her way and bend over backwards for a friend. Sometimes even to the point of being blind to when a friend may be in the wrong. She generally believes in the good of people for the most part though her brush with the dark side of humanity via the massacre has also given her a bit of a cynical tinge at times. Though that doesn't keep her from disliking people if she disagrees or argues with them. That being said, when someone has betrayed her or abused her trust, she takes a long while to turn back around, if the person even gets back into her good graces. Forgiveness is still a very difficult thing for her.

While she's still got quite a bit of growing up to do, she's well on her way to being the general she'll eventually be.

Abilities:
Tyve is a normal human with the same limits of endurance as a normal human her age in peak condition. In addition, her upbringing and education brings her the ability to shoot a gun with startling accuracy, a trait she's continued to hone past academy. She can also wield a sword enough to stay alive for more than five minutes against a more competent foe. Note staying alive doesn't mean staying uninjured. So really people good with swords could just beat the tar out of her.

She also has surprisingly crazy good reflexes. And all the competency in tactics and warfare that being a military academy graduate living in wartime bequeaths. While she's far from incompetent, she still has a lot to learn and things still take her by surprise as opposed to the other way around.

Sample Entry 1:
[There's a voice on the phone. It sounds a bit bewildered actually.]

So apparently there is a strange creature outside where the dog used to be. [There's a pause.] I daresay it's almost dragon-like in it's qualities. Now were it not for this place, I'd say I'm slowly going crazy because things like that don't actually exist. Not where I'm from in any case. I suppose I'm calling because…I'm not quite sure how to deal with this situation should the new pet in my backyard start to try to eat me or set me on fire. I don't think a gun will be enough. [After all, soldier or not, she's certainly not stupid enough to go after something at least three times her size and crushing what might have been the doghouse.]

Anyone who deals with these sorts of things like to drop by and see to this problem for me? [Don't expect cookies as thanks though because Tyve does not do this cooking thing.]

Sample Entry 2:

[Tyve is in the park looking uncharacteristically frazzled. She backs into a tree, eyes darting from side to side before she cautiously looks up into the tree and then behind it.] Those…Damned…Ugh! [It's like the trauma of almost 15 years past has come back to haunt her. She's not quite sure if it's a machination of the town (after all it's been awfully quiet) or just a hideous coincidence, but she's not pleased at all. Though after a few moments she does decide to relax.] There's no way they can find me her-[There's a long pause as she hears faintly the sound of terrible things. If only she had her gun…]

[And so anyone in the park will be witnessing one grown woman shrieking all assortment of swears, clutching a purse and swinging said purse wildly at a particularly persistent flock of grey geese to no avail.]
