Character Name: Jane Shepard
Character Series: Mass Effect 2
Character Age: 31
Background: Going with the Earthborn/Sole Survivor background. Setting of the Mass Effect canon and plot of Mass Effect 1 is here, while the plot of Mass Effect 2 is here. I'll be taking Shepard from after the events of the opening movie, where the Normandy gets destroyed.

Personality: Jane Shepard did not have an easy life as a young girl. Growing up with no parents and running with gangs, she learned to be tough from an early age. As such, she's not someone who breaks easily, even under the most stressful and upsetting circumstances. When she had to leave Ashley behind to die, she refused to let the guilt get to her, focusing instead on completing the mission because the lives of so many depended on it. A sole survivor of the Akuze disaster, she watched 30 of her fellow comrades perish. Yet somehow, she's still a commander, and she's humanity's first Spectre. It takes a strong person to do all of that, with all the emotional trauma she's endured.

However, this is not to say that she did not suffer any effects from all those deaths. Akuze was bad, and while she didn't let it break her, she couldn't simply just let go of something that traumatic. As Jack once told her, stuff like that, it follows you wherever you go. The deaths of those 30 soldiers really haunted her, but it seemed that she was getting better at the start of Mass Effect 1. Time heals, right? Well, until you lose two comrades in the process of saving the world, one of which trusted you to make things right. Losing Wrex, and then Ashley, was a real blow to her, although she did her best to appear strong about it. She had an entire team looking up to her after all; if she broke down, then they would too. Especially Kaidan. Shepard does actually suffer from Survivor's Guilt; it's just that she's used to keeping it hidden, for the sake of the team. Even killing off the Rachni; yes, they were a dangerous race, but sometimes she has to wonder whether what she did was really the right thing, especially if they promised to stop killing others.

As such, in Mass Effect 2 she's resolved to get by with as little killing as possible. She'll still pull a trigger, but only after she's taken everything into consideration. She's realised that while a bullet is the quickest way to solve a problem, it's not always the best option. The regret that comes with one wrong shot is something that's had an impact on her, and it's taught her to be more careful everytime she aims her gun at people. When presented with a choice yet again to either kill the Heretic Geths, or brainwash them, she opted for the latter. Some of her team pointed out that it was a second sort of death for the Heretics, to lose their freewill. While they were right in a way, Shepard still chose to rewrite instead of destroy, simply because she wanted to give them a chance to live right. She never gave that chance to the Rachni, and does she wish she could take that back now.

Shepard has also, overall, become a kinder person in general after Mass Effect 1. She's more likely to help others solve their problems now in Mass Effect 2. This includes preventing a young man from dying when he tried to sign up for a suicidal mercenary mission, helped clear a Quarian's name when she was accused of stealing a Volus's chit, saved refinary workers from a fire even though it distracted them from the mission, and even helping to clear up a Krogan's confusion about the fish in the Citadel. She's become more of a girl scout than she was in Mass effect 1, when she was more inclined to just stay focused on the mission at all costs.

Lastly, Shepard has come to care for her crew, like they are her own family. Whether they're the team that goes with her into the battlefield, or the Normandy's crew like Joker and Dr Chakwas, they're all important to her. As such, she will go out of her way to ensure that they stay safe, eg in Mass Effect 2 she charged ahead to save her abducted crew members, although she was adviced to take more time for preparations. She didn't want to risk their lives. She goes around helping her team members as well. Miranda needs to rescue her sister? Done. Jack wants closure by blowing up the abandoned facility that tortured her? Let's do it. Mass Sergeant Gardner wants better ingredients? Shopping time! And she'll also be there to make sure they do the right thing. She knew Mordin would regret killing his student Maelon. She knew Miranda would regret killing Niket. And she knew that killing Sidonis wouldn't help Garrus in the long run, because what he needed to get over wasn't Sidonis, but his own guilt. She takes time to talk to her team, get to know them, maybe even be their friends, because they really are all she's got left in the galaxy.

On a side note, she did like Kaidan Alenko, but she did not pursue a relationship with him because she felt he deserved someone without so much emotional baggage. Suffice to say, their reunion in Mass Effect 2 really, really hurt her. A lot.

Abilities: Shepard is a Soldier; she's got better endurance which helps her lead the charge into the fray, and she knows how to use all the different guns available: heavy pistol, assault rifles, sniping rifles, sub-machine guns, shot guns and the heavy weaponry. She's got killer aim. She's also pretty strong and fit. As of Mass Effect 2, she's got some cybernatics inside her, but other than that she's as human as they get. She's also good at charming people with Paragon options, but she's still got a bit of Renegade options left. This is mainly left to the player's discretion, but she will have a bonus when it comes to convincing people.

Sample Entry:
Talking about emotions and logic with a Medic.
Getting to know the RED Spy.
Meeting Miku Hatsune.
First Voice test with Shepard.
