Personality: After the war, Malcolm Reynolds lost faith. It’s a difficult thing to keep when everything you’ve ever relied upon or believed in crumbles under your feet. Still, Mal kept moving forward when the rest of the galaxy went in an entirely different direction. He stayed true to his roots and was determined to stake out a life for himself that didn’t tie him down to anything. When the going gets tough, Mal gets tougher and then chews up the going like dog jerky. If there’s a job to do Mal makes sure it gets done, come hell or high water. Once he’s got a plan he will follow it through until his dying breath. And if things are looking bleak he will continue to push and scrape until there’s nothing left, and even then he’ll just keep on digging. Of course, when it comes to commitments, despite his undying determination, Mal prefers short-term jobs. He hates being tied down for too long and enjoys his freedom way too much. He has to keep moving. Staying in one place too long makes him antsy. This can sometimes get in the way of his relationships which is why he prefers to keep in the company of those who don’t get in the way of the going. The crew of his ship, his family, are the most important people in the world to him. They are an integral part of his way of life and he would give his very life for them. When you put down his crew, you put down Mal. He is loyal to the core and believes strongly in the code that no man gets left behind. There have occasionally been instances when that code was challenged and Mal had to figure out just what it meant to him and his crew, but in the end Mal has a heart gold despite the rusty exterior. He values the underdog and prefers to aid the needy before even acknowledging the not-so needy. He knows the value of human life and has sworn to protect it, but being ex-military caught in the heat of battle Mal knows well that death can also have meaning. He’s not afraid of it and also isn’t afraid to end a life if it comes down to it. His morals aren’t exactly a shining example of purity but he tends to have good judgment and solid common sense about things. He’s reasonable without being tetchy and regularly questions established law. Though, his stubbornness also means it takes him a long time to fix his errors. He may even see these errors plainly, yet he will keep going his own way out of pride. Despite having been on the losing side in the war, Mal is confident that it was still the right side and he has a lot of pride bottled up, hidden away where the Alliance can’t beat it down. He was a hard man of war, but Mal can sometimes show a childish side. It’s not that he doesn’t take things seriously, it’s simply how he deals with it when things get too serious. He’s perfected witty banter with a side of sarcasm and can multitask by getting things done at the same time. It’s somewhat of a contradiction and many who know him admit that they really don’t know him. They can’t seem to get in his head or have him figured out and that frustrates a few of them. Many have learned that that’s just how it is knowing Malcolm Reynolds.
Abilities: Being ex-military, Mal is extremely skilled with firearms, artillery, explosives, and hand-to-hand combat. He also has a fair but limited understanding of emergency first-aid, computers, machinery, electronics, and the inner and outer workings of spaceships and other vehicles.
