Character Name: Gumi (official product name is Megpoid, but everyone just calls her Gumi. No last name) Character Series: Vocaloid Character Age: product age is 3 years old, physically appears 16 Background: Megpoid, better known as Gumi, was the second Vocaloid released by Internet Co. Like Gackpoid (aka Gakupo), the first Vocaloid made by Internet Co., her voicebank provider was a famous voice actor. However, Gumi was met by general backlash from the fans mainly concerning her tacky design. Nevertheless, she proved to be adequately well-liked for her high-quality voicebank.
For about a year, Gumi was generally ignored by the fans in favor of the much more well-known Crypton Vocaloids and Gakupo, who was one of the only three male Japanese Vocaloids. However, Gumi’s popularity suddenly skyrocketed when producers began to compose high-ranking songs for her that achieved great fame. This sudden change of events moulded and stretched Gumi’s already eccentric personality to take on an insufferably arrogant side as some fans declared her peak of success “The Golden Age of Gumi”. She raced ahead of Gakupo in the popularity polls, climbing up to the levels of the elite Crypton Vocaloids.
Never judge a Vocaloid by her design; that was perhaps the lesson. But who needed morals? Goddamn, she was popular. As more Vocaloids were released, including two more by Internet Co. (Lily and Gachapoid), Gumi maintained her high position and enjoyed a great deal of affection from her fans around the world. Her ego never deflated one bit, considering it was all due to the influence of the fandom as goes the way Vocaloids function.
The Golden Age of Gumi is never going to end, as far as she’s concerned.
Personality: Vocaloids’ personalities tend to be fickle, since they depend entirely on the influence of their fans. In Gumi’s case, she was at first shoved aside to be the comedy relief oddball as a foil to Gakupo’s samurai zen, and she thus remained as such for a good year or so. No, it didn’t mean she was quiet. On the contrary, the fans enjoyed depicting her as one of the most eccentric and energetic Vocaloids.
A good chunk of her personality actually came about the time her popularity began to crescendo. She’s incredibly arrogant, adores the spotlight, and won’t hesitate to remind people how amazing and awesome she is. But, no, she isn’t intentionally trying to come off as mean or as a narcissist. Actually, Gumi seems to be completely oblivious to anything that doesn’t involve her- that’s how far her self-involvement extends. Although she does genuinely try to make an effort to show some concern for her fellow Vocaloids and whatnot (because what fans will like a singing idol who isn’t friendly?), in the end, it’s all to save face for herself. As such, Gumi is selfish more often than never whether she’s aware of it or not.
Despite her big-headedness and idiocy (which results from said big-headedness), Gumi isn’t always reluctant to sharing her spotlight. Hey, the best Vocaloid out there has to set a good example, right? Right? Right. All acts of friendliness trail back to making herself look good, in reality. It’s difficult to say if Gumi is really nice or mean because of this. She isn’t nice in the sense that she’s selfless (ha, as if she’d ever be), but she never tries to make people unhappy either. It all comes with being a Vocaloid. As long as the fans are satisfied, she’s satisfied. Besides, how else would she be able to keep her fanbase? As such, she's also open-minded (sometimes to a fault)... as long as it keeps her looking good.
Behind that huge wall of pride is the eccentric half of Gumi that had first been shaped in the first year of her release. She often takes the routes that go against common sense, or simply ignores all logic (though that’s mostly to fit her own selfish wants). And with the roaring popularity of UramanbouP’s Gumi songs, which are in lack of better words, batshit insane, that weird part of Gumi remains as strong as her arrogance.
In short, Gumi is an arrogant, eccentric, genki singing robot idol.
Abilities: She’s a robot, but other than that, no other notable abilities.
