Personality:. Lassiter comes off to be a complete hard-ass with a no-nonsense attitude when we first meet him in the series pilot, wanting nothing more than to deliver justice to those that break the law. Since he treats everyone he ever associates with in this same manner, it leaves him with very few friends, and has him being constantly reminded to act like a human being, although when he does this it comes out with thick sarcasm than genuine sympathy. The few friends that are loyal to stick by his side know that there is more to him than just sour expressions and scathing insults, and honestly see him as a semi-decent human being.
Despite this asshole complex of his, Lassiter actually has a soft side to him that he rarely ever shows, and if he does show it, it is done with extreme subtlety and makes him quite awkward. During a drive to a seminar in "Shawn vs. The Red Phantom", he attempts to tell Interim Chief Karen Vick how glad he was to hear that she was given the position, despite the fact the previous chief was his mentor and taught him everything he knows. When it discovered that Vick was on the phone with her husband and not paying attention to him, he denies he ever said anything. Later on in the episode, as Lassiter tries to suggest to cut back on the number of officers working the day shift, Chief Vick goes into labor. Of course, Lassiter is initially more concerned about his briefcase being ruined due to her water breaking, but he sticks by her side as she gives birth to her daughter, having a sweet moment and explaining that a big rift in his marriage was due in part over whether he wanted children or not.
Lassiter also is quite a derp. He's a fan of history and actively participates in Civil War re-enactments. He also has a very unhealthy obssession with firearms, owning over 11 which are hidden around his home and affectionately calling it 'his baby' in "Last Night Gus". He also finds enjoyment in tap dancing, seeing that it helps him clear his head and handle the stress of his every day life.
When Juliet finds a little black address book while trying to plan a surprise party for him in "Poker? I barely know her!", he tells her off and admits that the address book was of people he's arrested and put in jail, and explains that he now has to move because they all know where he lives. Lassiter also has a physical 'crap list' that has people who have crossed him in any way. Such persons on this list include Hillary Rodham Clinton (possibly due to the fact that Lassiter is a Republican), Chris Tucker, and unsurprisingly, Shawn and Henry Spencer. Henry was actually crossed out before, but when he mentioned that it disturbed him that Lassiter has such a list, he was placed on it again. With this crap list, he is shown to also hold grudges for a good length of time. For example: having "Check-out girl at the A&P" written down, even though the supermarket chain no longer exists in California.
It is also very well known that Lassiter has an inexplicable hatred for squirrels, and his neighbor goes and files a lawsuit against him for shooting the squirrels that roam in his back yard. In addition, he has an irrational fear of snow globes, and is petrified when everyone he works with is convinced he wants one for Christmas.
Relationships are something Lassiter isn't a pro at, due in part to him being a dick. In all honestly: He's actually pretty damn clueless in this department. While it's said that he's initally in a trial separation from his wife, Victoria, In "From the Earth to Starbucks" he actually states they've actually been separated for over two years. He honestly doesn't want to believe his marriage is beyond repair because that would mean admitting he failed, which is something he will never admit to. He tries to be amicable to his wife, continuing to send her gifts on valentine's day and the like, only to be told that 'Separation means Apart". He does eventually suck up his pride in "Tuesday the 17th", when Victoria ultimately hands him divorce papers and he signs off on them, stating that he'll let go of the past and think of the future without her.
During his separation with his wife, he partook in a secretive affair with his partner, Lucinda Barry. Barry ultimately doesn't want their relationship to be discovered, as then it would be pointed out that she was simply being promoted for sleeping with the Head Detective. However, Shawn ends up blowing their cover and soon after she's transferred, seemingly ending the relationship. Lassiter admits to Shawn while hooked up to a polygraph machine in "Shawn Rescues Darth Vader" that he really liked Barry as a girlfriend. He's also dabbled in a relationship with Karen Vick's sister Barbara, only to quickly end the relationship due to her being controlling.
In "This Episode Sucks", he immediately feels a connection between himself and Marlowe Viccellio, and goes to great lengths to discover who she is (by giving vague descriptions that she's beautiful and perfect). When she is arrested for a string of murders that involve bloodletting, he calls their relationship off, as he let her into 'the festival of light that happens inside his chest cavity' only to be screwed over in the end. However, Lassiter soon realizes that she's hasn't killed anyone, and was only trying to help her brother (who had a rare blood disorder) in any way she could, even if it meant breaking the law. He vows to wait the 6-18 months that she's incarcerated, although this doesn't stop him from attempting to pick up chicks by touting the line "My girlfriend's in prison!" in "Neil Simon's Lover's Retreat".
Lassiter tries to be amicable when it comes to co-workers, but it usually comes off rather awkward. He's always complimenting them for their duty but at the same time reminds them that as Head Detective, he's ultimately superior. He commends Junior Detective Juliet O'Hara for her extensive knowledge in police codes, but still treats her as a rookie detective, rarely giving her the opportunity to apply her own skills when it comes to solving crimes. Lassiter even goes on to feel rather jealous when he is seemingly replaced while being investigated for Murder in "Lassie did a bad, bad thing", and is the one to console her after he saves her life in "Mr. Yin Presents...".
One 'co-worker' he doesn't treat this way (and probably never will treat amicably) is Shawn Spencer, who he finds to be a constant annoyance in every case he's assigned to and would rather see him in prison. His blatant animosity towards Shawn is mainly due in part to the fact that he worked hard to get to where he is today, only to have Shawn pop up randomly and come up with far-fetched conclusions that leads to the case being solved. He does admit drunkenly in "From the Earth to Starbucks" that he actually respects Shawn, even going as far as to pull his motorcycle off the auction block in "Cloudy...Chance of Murder". When it is discovered that Shawn is in a serious relationship with Juliet O'Hara in "Shawn Rescues Darth Vader", Lassiter vows (and obviously threatens) that if he were to ever hurt her or disrepect her in any shape, way or form, he'd shoot him. Repeatedly.
