Character Name: Anya Jenkins
Character Series: Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Character Age: 1140 (appears and acts approximately 20)
Background: Wiki!
Personality: Spending a thousand years as a demon did not give Anya a great picture of how normal humans interact. On top of that, the other villagers had considered her odd even as a human. She can be very blunt, often saying exactly what she means instead of being tactful or euphemistic. She has very little shame and only the loosest idea of what’s appropriate. She says exactly what she's thinking at any given time.

She's also very greedy and self-centered. She likes it when Xander pays attention to her, not other people. She really likes money and thinks capitalism is a great economic system, though she didn't always feel that way. She likes pretty things and has no qualms about telling people that she wants their stuff. She appreciates things such as recompense for a hard day's work and presents. She is terrified of rabbits, but likes monkeys a lot.

Anya has a lot of trouble dealing with her own mortality. As a demon, she would have lived forever. She already lived a thousand plus years. Now that she's human, her long life is doomed to come crashing to a screeching halt relatively soon. Humans don't live very long, and when they do, they spend the last few years looking wrinkled and unattractive and not being able to do much because their bodies are so worn out. Anya has a lot of trouble with the idea that age and death will happen to her. She finds it terrifying and upsetting. She also doesn't know how to deal with other's deaths. Sure, she's seen many people die, and has killed more than a few of them herself, but the death of someone she cares about is disturbing to her. In "The Body," she talks about how death is stupid and mortal and she doesn't understand it.

Mostly, though, Anya is pretty upbeat. She's seen so much destruction and horror, and caused so much of it, that things that disturb normal people leave her unphased. Though she is certainly capable of being unhappy or angry, most of the time, she's not. She has a tendency to casually talk about the gruesome things she's done in the same way someone might discuss picking up their laundry. It happened, and even if she doesn't do it anymore, she's not exactly repentant.

Anya has a tendency to cling to the things she has. This isn't just about objects, though she certainly shows a tendency towards greediness, but she throws herself full-heartedly into whatever she does. As Aud, she was dedicated to her love of Olaf, though he didn't feel the same way. After she turned him into a troll, vengeance became her life. Though some demons, such as Halfrek, choose to do things outside of work occasionally, Anyanka never did. In the episode Selfless, she claims, "Vengeance is what I am." Her entire identity is based off her job. That makes it that much more devastating when she loses her power center and turns into a human.

Lost and confused, she grabs onto the next thing available, Xander Harris, the man she was sent to curse. She followed him around until he fell for her too, and she becomes Xander's girlfriend. She sings a song, also in Selfless, about how she'll now be his Mrs and how she'll never let him go now that she has him. It's a new identity to take on, someone else for her to be. She pins all her hopes on him, entirely molding her personality around what she thinks he'd like, and she's again shattered when he doesn't pull through. She ends up afloat again, tries to get back into vengeance, finds it's upsetting again, and eventually gives up her powers and decides to find out who she is outside of her jobs or romantic interests.

It takes Anya a while to warm up to the rest of the Scoobies. Her lack of social awareness make her difficult to like, and she doesn't really make much of an effort. She especially tends to clash with Willow. For her part, she knows that Willow is the woman with whom Xander cheated, and she doesn't trust her not to do it again even though Willow is gay now. Willow doesn't much trust the ex-demon with Xander, either, and considering they met when Anya was trying to trick Willow into doing dark magic to reclaim Anya's power center, she has reasons to mistrust her. They eventually get closer, and Anya is part of the inner Scooby circle that works to bring Buffy back from the dead. However, Anya still doesn't hesitate to tell Willow when she thinks she's been using too much magic, or later, that Willow should just start using it again to break out of the house within which they're trapped. Willow tries to help Anya when the vengeance is getting out of control in early Season 7. Though they eventually warm up to each other, they never end up best of friends.

Though it was Giles, not Buffy, who destroyed Anya's power center, Buffy is the Slayer and Slayers are traditionally fairly anti-demon. They are awkward around each other at first, and Buffy doesn't take her relationship with Xander seriously, thinking he was just taking advantage of her unquestioning devotion. After her relationship with Riley ends she changes her mind and looks to them as a beacon of hope, that love can actually last, and that they have to work out because her relationship didn't. She and Anya grow closer through the seasons until Buffy considers her one of her best friends. That friendship isn't enough to stop Buffy from trying to kill Anya when she learns of what Anya's been doing as a demon, but she does later work to save Anya's life after she's given up her demon powers. Anya resents that a little because she was trying to be her own person, but on the other hand, she doesn't want to die, so she accepts Buffy's help.

Anya doesn't care for Giles at first. He is stuffy and British and fairly responsible for her lack of demon powers. She also finds his stories and lectures boring, and she doesn't hesitate to tell him. They don't get along very well in Season 4, but in Season 5 he hires her on at his store, the Magic Box. Her knowledge of demons and the arcane, plus her extreme aptitude with money make her a great employee. The shop gives her a new purpose in life, and she grows closer to Giles, to the point that he leaves her the store when he goes to England. Though she makes sure to tell him he can't have the store when he returns to America, she still has a great deal of affection for him. But his lectures are still boring.

Though Anya and Spike don't talk much, occasionally the two of them run into each other when they both are feeling pretty low about their lot in life and commiserate over how stupid life is and how much easier things were when they could both just kill the people who made them miserable. They have a lot in common, what with both being former threats that are now incapacitated, and being outsiders to the fairly tight-knit group. They also both have a certain bluntness, though Anya's is more thoughtless while Spike's is often somewhat mean.

Anya isn't very good with children, as is demonstrated by her relationship with Dawn. Dawn is a teenager when she first shows up, but Anya treats her like a very young child. Though this irks Dawn, Anya doesn't really notice and continues to do it.

Really, Xander and Giles are the two people who help her most in growing accustomed to human life. Willow mostly argues with her, and Buffy has other things to worry about most of the time. Xander, though, takes the time to teach her about human ways and correct her when she's being even more socially inept than usual. Giles offers her a job, and teaches her how enjoyable earning money is. Selling things to customers is what really teaches her how to be at least somewhat less blunt as customers have a tendency to not buy things if the shopkeeper berates them. She never fully loses her strangeness, but she does learn to fit in a little bit better.

Abilities: As a demon, Anya had the power to grant wishes, any wish, so long as it's made by someone with a thirst for vengeance. It can be anyone, but she prefers women because of her own issues with men. She can also teleport and survive things like swords through the chest and has some limited telekinesis abilities. Plus superstrength and the ability to sense people who are crying out, presumably mentally, for vengeance. She can blend in with humans, but she can also take on a monstrous demon visage.

She has none of these powers without her power center, which comes in the form of a necklace. Without it, she's a normal human, though she retains all her knowledge from her extremely long life.

Sample Entry:

What is this? [Anya’s voice is high pitched, the words sharp and fast.]

I didn’t expect the money to be as good as it would be in 2000, of course. I remember the 1950s and I know what “inflation” is. But that’s now compared to then! Not… women compared to men! I am an excellent employee! I deserve excellent monetary compensation!

[She pauses, seething a bit.]

If I still had my demon powers I would rip out the manager’s spine for such unfair treatment of women. It simply isn’t right.
