Character Name: Hope Estheim Character Series: Final Fantasy XIII Character Age: 14 Background: Game history Hope’s history Personality:
Hope is a kid whose namesake doesn’t initially define his personality. He starts out as a meek boy, reliant upon the strength of his mother to make up for the insecurities he has. Typically reserved, polite, and passive: Hope rarely ever had anything he stood up for and considered himself to be useless due to his very constant confidence issues. He’s weak bodied, easily spun into doubt, young, and small: not exactly hero material in any sense of the word.
After watching his mother die though Hope goes through a huge adjustment. Grief overrides him and brings out the anger and frustration he normally would dismiss. Though his hatred towards Snow (the man who was involved with his mother’s death) overwhelms and clouds his judgment, Hope is finally able to push himself to act. He’s untrained in combat and cursed low stamina but wants desperately to become strong enough to right the wrongs that he’s suffered through.
With the absence of his mother Hope attaches himself to Vanille and Lighting, both of whom motivate him to be brave enough to attempt to talk about his mother’s death with Snow, to want to act upon his grief, and (though he acknowledges this as wrong) take revenge for his suffering. His attempts often resulted in him becoming too upset to be able to speak (which he loathes himself for). Through forgiveness however Hope is able to stop using his hatred for a crutch, and begin to improve himself further for the sake of survival, and to save the rest his home.
A fun fact about Hope is that despite his age he’s rather good with machines. With no experience in military engineering he’s able to control a gigantic robot, drive their worlds version of a car clearly meant for adults. He’s handy, and generally excited whenever he sees machines like those. It gives him a chance to show off what skills he does have, (his innocence) and help people!
Around people he doesn’t know Hope can be awkward and a bit shy, but as he gets to know others he opens up is more inclined to show his teasing, sassy, side. He likes being apart of a group, and whenever a situation appears where that group might be emotionally unsure, he does try to motivate everyone to stay and work together, (though with long enough silences he’ll start to crumble and stutter and try to politely remove himself from the stumble). He can follow adult conversations rather easily, and come to logical conclusions above his maturity level. He thinks outside the box, is observant, and eager to learn.
When Hope feels anger or hatred towards someone it is strong: he’ll speak shortly and clearly state his distaste. He won’t hold back asking questions he knows don’t have easy answers and will run in to fight someone regardless of his light weight, small size, and lack of physical prowess.
His concern for others is real, he will run over to a fallen child to help them, charge into a battle head first to defend a comrade, and fight with everything he’s got to protect another. Overall Hope has more faith in others than himself, is kind hearted, and well intended. He makes choices based on what is best for those around him.
Abilities: Lcie: Thanks to being cursed to servitude through his worlds deities (called Fal’Cie) Hope was made into a L’Cie. Being a L’cie grants him access to magic spells not available to the general populous as well as the ability to summon a Eidolon known as Alexander. Though the catch to this unwanted employment is that he has to complete a job he was given incredibly unclear directions on within a limited time frame, as indicated by the brand on his left wrist.
Glass Canon syndrome: As mentioned above thanks to his L’Cie status Hopes got a powerful variety of magic spells including: protective shields, offensive magic (fire, ice, wind, electricity, water) and healing spells he can all cast without tiring himself. Though the magic attacks are powerful, he can't take hits very well without his defensive spells to protect him.
Alexander: An enormous creature: which can only be called upon by Hope alone. Alexander comes to the aide of Hope when summoned but will also appear whenever the boy is lost in an emotional turmoil and will fight him to ‘show him the way’.
Sample Entry:
[Cars, robots, and mechanics all around were something that piqued the young teens interest. Though when he strolled past a 1950’s Packard Clipper he didn’t know what to make of it. The car looked similar to the ones in his world, but so different at the same time. ]
Can’t this hover…? [Hope kneels down to look at the wheels of the vehicle idly before opening the door to the car and plopping himself in the driver’s seat. It was too low so he couldn’t see far past the hood, and the car had a fairly primitive set up… but he was intrigued nevertheless.
A little tinkering of course revealed that while he didn’t have the key to start the ignition, there were other ways of starting the car: Like the wires under the steering wheel. When the engine gave a roar to its awakening Hope grinned and laughed, looking over his shoulder out of habit, to someone he expected to be there. ]
Ah-! I got it!! Hey Light-!! Check it out-!! [ Of course, she wasn’t there. No one was. ]
Oh… Right. [He’ll scratch the back of his head, frowning at his outburst and staring back to the steering wheel of the humming car.]
