Personality:

Typically described as a "nerd" with her nose always in the books, this description... is not too far from the truth. Maka is an extremely motivated and hardworking girl, and this shows through in more than just her grades, although it is notable that she's not only at the top of her class, but claims to enjoy studying and taking tests. Reading is her passion, and she's seen doing it often; it's hinted at that she does it so much, there aren't a whole lot of other activities she participates in (for example, she has no idea how to play basketball, and probably other sports too). When there's something she doesn't understand, her first idea is to grab a book about it; and if she can't find one about the topic, sadly but truthfully she'll only continue to end up lost on the subject. Her biggest driving force behind being so studious, however, is because Maka only wants to live up to her mother's footsteps, who was a seemingly incredible and amazing scythe meister. Her claims to aim for the top of the class was because her mom was as well, although she does actually manage to grab that number one spot and keep herself there.

But when you put aside her bookworm tendencies, Maka does come across as your fairly typical teenager. She has a circle of friends she frequently spends time with, and is generally a personable, bright person with her priorities in the best order she can put them in. Despite her studying habits and assertive behavior, Maka is easy to become friends with; she does have a softer, friendlier side whether she knows you or not, from encouraging new students at Shibusen to do their best or aiding someone in need of a buddy. She has incredible patience with Crona, an enemy turned ally in the middle of battle when it was discovered they never had anyone to love and protect them. Knowing her hobbies, one may expect Maka to not be a very sociable person, but she's actually not as withdrawn as one may think. However, she actually is a serious kind of person, in not just her work ethics but in personality as well; she isn't one to joke or tease too often, and is more likely to sigh at one's silly antics instead of laugh along with them.

Outside of schoolwork, Maka is equally determined in fulfilling her meister duties; "as a student of Shibusen", she'll say, she will even go out of her way to make sure trouble isn't afoot nearby. Maka is very dedicated and loyal to Shinigami, the teachers there, and everything their academy stands for, and doesn't even address any questions directed at their motives from opposing forces. Unsurprisingly, this also makes Maka extremely protective of people, whether they're a friend or an innocent bystander, she is one to always defend humanity when needed. The world needs to be protected at whatever cost, and that's exactly what she does, sometimes at almost drastic levels. If there's one thing Maka is in the admist of a fight, it's a force to be reckoned with; be it your run of the mill serial killer, immortal werewolf or the strongest of witches, she'll go after the enemy no matter who or what it is. A huge contrast from her normally friendly or serious demeanor, an intense fight is prone to bringing out Maka's incredibly fierce side. She'll go in with everything she's got, whether it's enough or not, and more likely than not she has some haphazard methods of going about a mission.

On that note, Maka can actually be very short tempered and hot blooded. Setting her off isn't very difficult-- which some of her friends take advantage of from time to time-- and has little patience regarding some things, mainly when it comes to others lacking common sense or teasing her. She's prone to yelling, hitting, and makes plenty of irrational decisions. Maka's smart, but her choices tend to run on her emotions rather than her logical thinking, which a lot of times does get her into some trouble. Frequently she's an "act first, think later" kind of girl, but does openly admit that's just how she works. Even though Maka holds a high level of confidence and courageousness, she's prone to having insecurities as well. Most of these lie in her ability and skill as a meister, which normally crop up when someone else points it out. She isn't the strongest and she knows this, often admitting that her fellow meisters Kid and Black Star are way ahead of her in terms of strength. Though, she doesn't wallow in her faults for too long; more times than not she can be talked out of these moments, and with a few encouraging words and a voice of reason can get back on track to the task ahead. At the end of the day, Maka's driving force and sheer determination overrides any fault or insecurity she has.

Abilities:

As a weapon meister, Maka is incredibly proficient when it comes to fighting; she doesn't have sheer strength, not like her other friends and teammates do, but she is extremely athletic and has quick reflexes and flexibility to make up for it. However, her fighting style relies heavily on a scythe, so without a pole-like sort of weapon to make up for the lack of her partner should it happen, obviously she wouldn't be able to reach her max capabilities. Nonetheless, Maka is more than able to hold her own in a fight.

Her own ability is something called Soul Perception, a skill that allows her to see and "read" another being's soul (provided that they have one or aren't hiding it, the latter which is possible within SE canon), or even detect one's wavelength from a distance. Because her Perception ability is stronger than most others', she's also able to pick out things like surface level personality traits or strong intentions and feelings. This can be kiiiinda godmodey, so naturally permission will be asked before using it on someone.

This might be considered an ability (even though it's a little moot when taken out of the canon setting), so here goes; Maka also has something called the Anti-Demon Wavelength. It's never specifically addressed what exactly this does (much like her Grigori-type soul), but we do know it's capable of making one extremely resistent to wavelengths of insanity (which is basically stuff that makes you go cray cray).
