Character Name: Conan Edogawa | Kudo Shinichi Character Series: Detective Conan Character Age: 7 | 17 Background:
Shinichi is the son of the retired actress Yukiko Kudo and best selling mystery novelist Yuusaku. Even at a young age Shinichi had a hunger for mysteries that just could not be satisfied as he spent most of his days as a child locked in a library with a mystery book of some kind. When he wasn't off looking for neighborhood mysteries with his friend Ran Mouri then it was safe to assume he was in the Kudo library. His favorite Detective, of course, is non other than Sherlock Holmes. Meanwhile, Shinichi managed to get acquainted to crimes scenes as his father started to help the police out on particularly difficult cases and Shinichi would sometimes tag along. He has not yet managed to beat his dad as a detective but he might one day.
At age fourteen his childish parents up and decided to move to L.A. while Shinichi chose to stay in Japan, most likely because he wanted to stay with Ran. From Fourteen to sixteen Shinichi built up quite a number of solved cases and became known as the famous High School Detective and savior of the Japanese police since he could easily work through any case laid out before him. At some point while he was sixteen his friend won the regional karate championship and as a reward he promised to take her to tropical land. He was a very busy detective at the time and his cases continued to push his plans back but eventually he found time to go to the amusement park where his life would change forever.
While out with Ran there is a grisly murder that occur on the same roller coaster Shinichi, Ran, and two suspicious guys in black just so happen to be riding. Shinichi quickly solves the murder and makes a mental note of the guy's in black considering them suspicious but not the culprits in the current case. Later, while trying to console Ran about not letting cases affect her, he notices one of the men from before stalking around a bush behind the ferris wheel. He breaks away from Ran and promises to catch up with her later before tailing after the guy. He stops just out of view of the man in shades and watches huge black mail transaction right before his eyes, making plans to report he saw as pulls out a camera for photographic evidence.
Unfortunately, Shinichi is still very much a child and he forgot a very important fact that he should have remembered and might have actually saved him from the fate that was to become of him. There had been two people on that roller coaster he'd marked as suspicious so when the other snuck up behind him there wasn't much hope for the poor detective and he was struck over the head. Because of murder case from earlier, the two men decide not to bother with guns as neither has a silencer and make the decision to test a previously untested poison on him. They pop a small pill into his mouth and poor water down his throat before quickly making their escape and leaving him for dead.
The detective has a stroke of luck, however, as their poison does not kill him and instead he has a very rare reaction to the poison and ends up shrinking to the size of a small six year old boy. The transformation is much less than painless and even Shinichi feels like he's dying as he passes out. When he comes too, Shinichi quickly realizes that everything around him seems much bigger. He hasn't quite realized what's happened to him and becomes naturally suspicious of the officers referring to him as a little boy. He escapes the officers shortly after getting a look in the mirror and seeing with his own eyes something that should have been physically impossible. He rushes home and tries to unlock his front gate finds that it's impossible as now he is just too short. He manages to convince a family friend and his neighbor, Professor Agasa that he's the High School Detective and the two quickly agree that it would be best to hide his identity.
Immediately after the decision is made, Ran Mouri comes looking for Shinichi and finds the little boy, who had quickly shoved on a pair of his dad's old glasses, instead. The girl is completely fooled by the makeshift disguise and scoops him into a hug before pressing him for a name. The name he gives is a mix of two of his favorite writers since they happened to be right next to each other on the book shelf he was standing right in front of- Conan Edogawa.
Agasa convinces Ran to take 'Conan' home with her and tells Shinichi that he should look for leads at her house since her dad is a detective. Shinichi agrees and follows his best friend home only to discover her father is probably the laziest detective he's ever met and through the use of a few handy gadgets quickly transforms the man into a famous detective.
Apart from Agasa several others are aware for Conan identity. His parents, another high school detective and his best friend, Heiji Hattori, Kaitou Kid (an infamous thief) and an ex member of the organization that shrunk him.
Personality:
Shinichi is a detective that never takes a break. Even if he's not on a case he frequently finds himself curious about the people he comes in contact with. He is always using his detective skills to figure out someone's profession or where they were five minutes before he met them. When solving a case he focuses on one thing- He doesn't generally care about the people involved in the case as long as he figures out what happened, why it happened and how to prove it happened or prove who did it so that he can bring that one truth to light.
Murder and the most bizarre cases are his favorite kinds as he generally has little to no interest in thieves and finds adultery cases to be stupid and a waste of his time. He also isn't fond of kidnapping but he will take a case like it if it's brought to him. When solving cases, most people make the assumption that Shinichi is out for justice. That is not entirely accurate as he is mainly out for fun. He is a teenager after all, and he looks at his cases like a puzzle- cat and mouse. He doesn't usually give a damn about the victims of the murderers which is obvious since he's not affected by most crime scenes. He's seen bodies hacked to pieces and only casually mentioned this to his best friend, telling her he doesn't let the job effect him. He is out for justice in some senses to the word, but mostly he's out to solve the really complex puzzles which is why he likes the really complex cases that baffle the police. Especially locked-rooms murders.
Being the son of a retired actress he has a love for theatrics and loves to play out the drama of a situation and make a big show of his deductions. He loves to start from the beginning and go over every aspect of the case to keep his audience guessing until he finally reveals the culprit. He intentionally leaves out the most crucial detail of his accusations just to bait the culprit into demanding he show the proof. Which, he has no trouble doing.
He may be a capable detective and share almost all the traits of a classic detective but he has his faults such as his impatience and the biggest one being his recklessness. Even if it's all a game to him there is one aspect for the puzzle that he takes very seriously and that is a life. If he can stop it he will, if he thinks he can stop a murder he will try, even if it puts him danger. He has been known to run off without warning and usually right into danger. Nothing he can’t handle however, as long as he ‘s got his trusty kick shoes and belt, or even the wrist watch can get him out of a bind.
Shinichi is what you would call a mystery freak. This doesn’t change between when he’s Shinichi and when he’s Conan. He has read the series Sherlock Holmes more times then he can probably count. He’s been to a Holmes convention, had to take thousand question test and most likely, got a perfect score on it. The Kudo library is filled from floor to ceiling with mystery books and it’s an easy bet to say he’s read every last one of them.
Before shrinking, Shinichi was a very arrogant, spoiled rich boy. He was under the belief he’s the best thing since sliced bread and his attitude towards others made this very apparent. As Shinichi, he could move around crime scenes freely and didn't need any help while conducting an investigation. Now that he's stuck as the grade-schooler Conan Edogawa that has changed drastically. He has to watch how he words things and basically lead the adults to the right answers. It can be very annoying but through it he's learned a few social skills and also how to be a manipulative little brat if he makes just the right expressions.
It’s less noticeable as Shinichi, but Conan seems to have problems tolerating people who are less then intelligent. It’s seen most often when he’s talking to the Shounen tantei dan ( a group of kids that have adopted Conan as their friend), or if someone has just said something more on the dumb side.
While Mysteries usually have his undivided attention there is a part of him that is still a normal teenager; Ran. Ran Mouri is Shinichi’s childhood friend and love interest. He’s so hung up over her that his love for her truly deserves it’s own part in his personality. He admires Ran’s strength and compassion above all other things about her and truly sees her as the most important person in the world. He would do anything for her. Even as Conan, his love for her hasn’t changed, even though they live together. He hates having to lie about his identity to her but he’d rather she stayed safe. If Ran ends up in danger Conan gets reckless and all the intelligence he holds tends to go down the drain.
Abilities: Shinichi purely human and, aside from shrinking hasn't even had a brush with the supernatural- he refuses to believe it exists. However, he does have one ability and that's his intelligence. The kid is like a sponge and is always willing to learn new things as he takes a very different stance than Sherlock Holmes when it comes to keeping up with certain subjects. Holmes believes that he only needs to learn about subjects that would be useful to him as a detective while Shinichi is under the impression that there is no telling what might be relevant in a case and makes it a point to soak up all the knowledge he can.
[Best way to get answers that he can actually work with? Lay on the little kid-cute. A lot of people have a weakness for cute kids.]
Ne, can anyone tell me where the milk comes from? I was always told it came from a dairy cow so does this place have cows? I haven't seen one so I was just curious.

[There is a small boy seated at his desk with a very bored and unimpressed expression on his face as all his other classmates seem to have taken cover under their desks. He even lets out a loud sigh at there antics and reaches for a book to take his mind off their stupidity.]
"Conan, I believe you're supposed to be practicing 'Duck and Cover' with us."
Why?
"Because you must be ready in case of a flash."
[Conan is unimpressed and is giving Mrs. Drone-teacher a very skeptic look before he lowers his book and gives a long, annoyed sigh.]
There's no point to that. Even if there was a threat like that there'd still be no point in 'Duck and Cover.' If you're close enough to see the flash you don't have a chance. You're dead. No one can survive that kind of radiation poisoning so really, this whole exercise is kind of stupid.
"If that's how you feel about it, I have to send you home with a note."
-What? Again?
"You need to learn your manners Mr. Edogawa."
[Conan lets out an annoyed grumble and slinks farther down in his desk.]
