Entity | Depict1 | Not Reserved

Personality:
Despite his age, both chronically and physically, Entity seems to act somewhat closer to a very young child or a wounded puppy. He is very skittish and unsure about most anything around him and even the most innocent looking things will often make him suspicious. However, once his suspicion passes, he becomes completely curious about something, examining it as carefully as he possibly can and often refusing to give it up -- unless something else gets his attention, of course. This even goes as far as Entity inadvertently stealing something that belongs to someone else simply because he was curious about it.

This is not to say he's a thief, or malicious at all. After centuries alone and cut off from the world, Entity simply no longer remembers much of anything. Speech comes slow to him, social graces are all but unknown, and it's only fear of death that causes him to give personal space to anyone. Thankfully, Entity is also a fast learner and can pick up most anything fairly easily, provided he's shown it well enough: because of his lack of familiarity with most of anything and time spent locked in a tiny cage, he struggles to teach himself anything. While he certainly can sometimes, provided what he's attempting to learn is simple enough or at least relating to his experiences, for a vast majority of skills (mundane or not) Entity must be actively taught it. As it is, he's very excited and active when attempting to learn things and rarely ever tends to give up -- if he's being taught something, very little can make him give it up or distract him from it.

Unfortunately, Entity does have trouble with socializing most of the time. Because his only interaction for so long was Shadow, he takes a very stark view on liars: anyone who tells any lie, no matter what it may be, can never be trusted. Any orders from people he doesn't know or even suspects might be "liars" are outright ignored at best or prompt Entity to do the exact opposite at worst, even if it may seem detrimental to his health. Once proven to be a "liar," it's very difficult for someone to regain Entity's trust, though someone who has never been officially labored a liar (simply being ignored because of Entity's wide-spread fear) will have an easier time befriending him once they give him some truthful orders or Entity figures out that disobeying them hurts him.

Because of his fear, Entity has severe trouble with authority figures. If he trusts them, he has little trouble listening to them (though he still might not follow their orders exactly), but they're proven to be liars he can often land himself in hot water, ignoring people who he should really listen to for whatever reason and even outright rebuffing them. In short, anyone who wishes to stay on his good side must be very, very careful about what they say around him; Entity tends to take things fairly literally and even a single lie will break any trust he has in a person.

When someone does gain his trust, Entity tends to cling to them like an abused puppy. While he won't shadow their every step, he will always go back to them for everything he can and do whatever he can to try and make them happy. Praise goes a long way with him and even the faintest praise can make him overly delighted and happy. On the other side, punishment and criticism seem to have a radically opposite effect, causing Entity to quickly withdraw from the person unless serious damage control is done, and fast.

Shadow is, as his name suggests, somewhat of the exact opposite. He tends to speak very calmly and smoothly, having no problems giving orders to interacting with other people. The problem therein is the fact that his "interactions" are always false -- Shadow lies constantly, tricking and deceiving people into doing what he wants or what will get them out of the way. He's very much a sociopath, incapable of caring for others and all too happy to drive them into something that will end up getting them killed -- or at least hurt enough to stay out of the way.

This stems from why Shadow was created -- Entity's personality fractured off into him for protection, and so every lie, deception, and false truth Shadow tells is all in the name of keeping that protection up. Unfortunately, his sense of safety is very twisted and warped: Shadow believes that the only real safety is from being locked in a cage away from everyone else and has been shown very willing to do anything to try and keep Entity in said situation... so long as it doesn't kill him, anyway. A little pain builds character, right?

Surprisingly, Shadow is capable of telling the truth and has no problems doing so when it benefits him or Entity in some way -- after all, his entire existence is to "take care" of his other half. These truths, however, often come with a bite or a snarl behind them and even while not lying Shadow has a tendency to be cruel and rub salt in the wound, as it were. He gets a form of twisted delight in seeing people in pain, regardless of the reason why, and seems unable to resist when someone he wants gone is in trouble.

While Shadow often attempts to remain calm and cool (if in a very threatening manner), it doesn't take much to get underneath his skin. When that happens, the calm illusion breaks and he becomes frantic and angry, often screaming and hissing at whatever's causing him anger. Eventually, if pushed far enough, he will be pushed into insanity instead, his sadism and sociopathy becoming much more pronounced. It isn't easy to revert him back from this and much harder for Entity to regain control during such an episode, making it best well avoided... difficult as that can be.
