Character Name: Dave Strider Character Series: Homestuck Character Age: 13 Background:a wiki
Personality:
Dave is quite possibly the coolest kid to ever exist, in any universe. Even hot alien chicks can't get enough of charm and style, and his delicately tuned sense of irony is unmatched. All of his friends are also completely convinced by this, and would never question his unerring coolness, instead choosing to crawl about on the ground by his feet and worship his every red tinted word. Or I guess in more truthful terms, Dave is in the dictionary next to “trying way too hard.” He sets himself to be a paragon of cool, doing whatever it takes to be perceived or seen as fucking awesome. He practically worships everything his Bro does and refuses to see fault in it, from the puppetry to the outright stupid (who keeps swords in the fridge how are you supposed to get Hot Pockets out?), and strives to become what he believes is a level of cool untouchable by everyone else. He creates stupid comics, dumb websites, and shitty blogs, all for the sake of the Holy Irony In The Sky (with Diamonds), distances himself emotionally from his friends, and generally denies being affected by anything else beyond awe at his own incredible self.
Even his interests seem to focus on creating an image, though he is quite fond of his music. He has his own set of turntables, and uses them to create sweet jams and shit, and is seen sending them to Jade. He also has a fascination with rap, and rapbattles, which I guess are so outdated (and also really, dave, really??) that they are now coming back around the other way as cool and ironic. Of course, what actually is ironic, and what isn't, is a pretty fine and often fuzzy line, and sometimes just doesn't make any sense at all. He never speaks directly, much preferring to completely avoid the point by being intentionally obtuse, using metaphors, phrasing and assholishness to compensate. He can be pretty hard to pin down and communicate with, and will avoid discussing upsetting topics by getting more and more wrapped and wound up in his metaphors until the point is lost. It's pretty silly. When he's really wound up or upset, he verges onto the nonsensical territory, trying to maintain his facade even when just about everyone else can see right through it - and when angered, will maintain his perfect pokerface until pushed just too far, at which point he will absolutely flip his shit. Ironically, for a Knight of Time, he can also be sort of forgetful, including misremembering his own equipment, though this may just be him being flippant.
He sets himself up as sort of an asshole, especially when the game begins. He picks on his friends for not understanding sylladexes and the things they enjoy, and seems to put a lot of importance on being able to understand the things that they have not experienced yet. A lifetime of being prepared for the game by his Bro instilled a sense of both independence and almost crippling insecurity. It's important to him to be able to prove himself, though the reasons seem to be fairly mixed - including both wanting to be able to protect those he cares about, and proving himself to them at the same time. Beneath a carefully crafted layer of irony, aloofness and just generally being a cool shit, he's actually just a insecure kid who wants approval and praise from his friends. He's pretty heavily affected by his emotions, but has spent so long hiding them that he effectively cripples his ability to express them. He is very insecure about his abilities, even questioning his own assigned role - though over the course of the game, he seems to grow to accept his position, putting aside some of his own internal debate for the good of himself, and his friends.
What Dave is afraid of most though, seems to be death. He is pretty freaked out by seeing the dead bodies of himself from alternate timelines, and can't bring himself to sacrifice, well, himself for God Tier (which involves dying on your quest bed) - despite his complaining to Terezi about being unable to match John's newfound power. He also has a pretty strange way of dealing with the death of his Bro at the hands of Jack Noir, being unable to bring himself to actually discuss it in any serious way, and losing a handle on his cool facade. An important development over the course of the game is his growing ability to relate to those he cares about, and be willing to stand and face the fears he has - including demanding he take what would be a suicide mission rather than let Rose go, and even after she knocks him out and runs ahead, he joins her anyway - facing his own fears, and for it being able to achieve the God Tier that had escaped him earlier.
Also he's really freaked out by puppets, I thought that'd be a good place to end this.
Abilities:
- Dave is a very well trained swordsman, having spent most of his life being raised for participating in Sburb by his Bro. He’s incredibly fast and has great reflexes (a necessity for living in the Strider home with their tendency to keep sharp objects in the most random of places), though he does have a habit of accidentally breaking his blade in half.
- His Time Powers, oh boy. As the Knight of Time, Dave has the ability to Time Travel, and in the event of creating a Stable Loop (meaning that no event in the past has changed radically enough to prevent Future Dave from going back in time in the first place, and thus past Dave can meet up again on the Alpha Timeline), can make multiples of himself as long as they remain on the Alpha Timeline. Also, he only really goes back in time - it’s far safer than hopping forwards. This could be pretty gamebreaking, but also requires equipment to use and can result in Alternate Timelines which then results in A Dead/Doomed Dave, and Dead Daves are the enemy.
- He is a incredibly talented artist, just wow. It’s amazing the things he creates.
- Also, he’s pretty much the best rapper you’ve ever heard.
