Apple Bloom | My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic | Reserved 2/3

Character Name: Apple Bloom.
Character Series: My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic
Character Age: Around 8-9 in human years. IDK how ponies age in Equestria.
Background:
Personality: One way that sums up Apple Bloom in a nutshell is that she is a child who badly wants to grow up. Ever been the youngest in your family and therefore treated like the ‘baby’ by your relatives, especially when your siblings are significantly older than you? This is Apple Bloom’s situation and she hates it. Ever been the only kid in a class who lacks something that makes them cool or look grown-up and felt left out because of it? Apple Bloom is one of the very few ponies in her class without a cutie mark (a little picture that appears on an Equestrian pony’s flank at some point in their lives, when they discover a special aspect of themselves which sets them apart from other ponies such as a special talent). Apple Bloom has been laughed at and bullied at school (especially by Diamond Tiara) for her lack of a cutie mark and been given names like ‘blank flank’.

Because of this, Apple Bloom is somewhat insecure. A handful of the MLP episodes focus on her obsession with finding her cutie mark so that she can be recognised as special by her peers and maybe also that she can be treated like an adult. Apple Bloom and her two friends, Sweetie Belle and Scootaloo, make up a trio called the ‘Cutie Mark Crusaders’ and take part in several antics to try and discover their special talents and therefore earn their cutie marks. Needless to say, they have yet to succeed.

One of the reasons that Apple Bloom has so far failed to earn her cutie mark, however, is because she is incredibly impatient when it comes to the issue. It is even hinted what her special talent is in the episode ‘The Show Stoppers’ when she perfectly fixed the Cutie Mark Crusaders’ clubhouse but this idea flies right over her head. The reason that Apple Bloom probably has not discovered this yet is because she is too bent on trying to get her cutie mark via whatever method she can (even trying to see if it’s something ridiculous such as arguing in the episode ‘The Stare Master’ ). She admits that she is afraid that “I’m gonna be as old as Granny Smith and still have a blank flank!” emphasising her insecurity and her impatience. Apple Bloom so badly wants to get her cutie mark quickly that she never takes the time to sit down and think about what she enjoys doing and what she is good at and had she done that, a cutie mark probably would have appeared on her flank much faster. Some of her friends even advise her that she just needs to be patient and her cutie mark will appear in time but Apple Bloom is too stubborn to really take their advice seriously.

Another side-effect of Apple Bloom’s impatience is that it sometimes prevents her from seeing the possible consequences of her actions. This is shown in the episode of ‘The Cutie Pox’ where she tries to cheat and get her cutie mark via a potion, which leads her to being infected with a disease called the ‘cutie pox’. This side effect is also seen when she helps her sister Applejack tries to pester other ponies into buying apples, thinking that the more apples she sells, the higher chance she has of getting a cutie mark – all this results in is some very angry ponies and a very angry big sister.

Despite her impatient and recklessness, however, Apple Bloom is not insensitive and she will try to undo her mistakes if what she actually sees what damage she has caused. This is seen in ‘Ponyville Confidential’ when she and her friends try to become journalists to earn their cutie marks and get roped into writing unkind gossip about the ponies around town. Once Apple Bloom and her friends truly realise what suffering they have inflicted on everyone, they write one last article as an open letter, explaining their regret at what they did and asking the town for their forgiveness.

As I mentioned earlier, Apple Bloom is also a stubborn pony and while this can work against her, it is also a great strength in some ways. In the episode ‘Bridal Gossip’, when everyone was frightened of the zebra Zecora because she looked different from all the ponies, Apple Bloom was one of the very few ponies who correctly thought that the zebra was not evil, despite what everybody else said – and when Applejack, and her friends were affected by some strange ‘curse’ and thought that was Zecora who was responsible, Apple Bloom decided to go and seek out Zecora on her own, in spite of her sister’s overprotective nature, and this shows that she can also be incredibly brave, despite her young age, when the situation calls for it. It should be pointed out that was Apple Bloom not stubborn enough to try and to look for Zecora herself, she would not have found out the real cause of the ‘curse’ and Zecora, having faced prejudice from the other ponies, would not have been able to make the cure for said ‘curse’ as the other ponies would not give her the benefit of the doubt.

Additionally, this young filly is also very loyal. While Apple Bloom hates being treated like a baby, she is incredibly fond of her family. The Apple family is famous throughout Equestria for growing the most delicious apples. Its family members take great pride in producing apples and apple-based products such as cider and apple strudel. This pride is something that Apple Bloom has definitely inherited – she is seen in a few episodes helping her family out on the apple ranch and helping them sell cider in the ‘Super Speedy Cider Squeezy’. Additionally, she bluffs to the Flim Flam brothers that her family can make cider faster than they can when the Flim Flam brothers threaten to send the Apple Family business to ruin with their own business, showing that she will protect her family’s honour when it is threatened.

Apple Bloom’s loyalty is also shown in the episode ‘Sisterhooves’ Social’ when she is shown to be incredibly close to Applejack, despite the fact that the latter sometimes treats her as a baby. They are seen in ‘Sisterhooves Social’ together, making games together out of their chores to make them more fun. When Sweetie Belle decides to adopt Applejack as her new ‘sister’ as a result to the way her real sister, Rarity, treated her, Apple Bloom becomes a little bit possessive of Applejack. She is upset in the episode ‘The Last Roundup’ when Applejack, who has gone for a while to participate in a competition, sends a sudden note to tell her family that she is not returning to Ponyville.

The young pony is also very loyal and kind to her friends as well as her family, however, always willing to help her friends when they are in trouble. She was the one who suggested to Sweetie Belle that she and Rarity took part in the ‘Sisterhooves Social’ when Sweetie Belle tells her that she is having sibling problems. Additionally, when the problem does not seem to be resolved, she eventually agrees to ‘lend’ Applejack to Sweetie Belle for the Sisterhooves social race (although she insists that it is only for ‘one day’ as Applejack is still important to her), when in reality, she was actually conspiring with Applejack and Rarity for a plan to make Rarity secretly switch with Applejack at some point during the race so that Sweetie Belle and her sister could resolve their problems with each other and become closer. This shows that, despite her loyalty to her sister, Apple Bloom cares enough for her friend that she can be willing to make small compromises so that Sweetie Belle is happy again.

All in all, Apple Bloom is a young pony who has huge insecurities about growing up like many kids her age and this can lead her to trouble. However, she is also a kind and friendly pony, like Applejack. She is a sister that Applejack can definitely be proud of!

As a side note: Like the rest of the Apple family, Apple Bloom speaks in a Southern US accent.
