Background: TA-DAH

Personality:
Kariya Matou is a broken man, destroyed by his own misguided ideals and weakness. He is fundamentally a coward at heart, only able to muster the courage to stand up for himself when it means being able to open a path to escape from his problems. In his youth, he stood up to Zouken Matou, the ancient head of the Matou family, but only for the purpose of turning his back on his position as heir to the family magic. He summoned the strength of will to enter the Holy Grail War, knowing that it would mean the end of his life. And at all points in between, he avoided responsibility and conflict, never able to tell his childhood friend Aoi how he felt about her or the choices she had made in her life.

Kariya deeply regrets his own weakness, believing himself directly responsible for the terrible fate that befell Sakura Tohsaka as she was given up for adoption to the Matou family. He feels intensely guilty for abandoning his family, as now the responsibility of inheriting their terrible secrets has fallen upon an innocent girl who deserved none of it. In addition, he feels that had he been able to tell Aoi not to marry Tokiomi Tohsaka or to protest giving up her second-born daughter, he may have been able to avert Sakura’s fate long before it became an issue. His entry into the Holy Grail War is therefore as much about punishing himself as it is finding salvation for Sakura.

Because of his low self-opinion, and perhaps somewhat spurred on by it, Kariya has an incredibly self-sacrificing personality. He is willing to put his own life on the line and do whatever it takes to ensure the safety and security of those he loves, while simultaneously believing that he is not worthy of receiving their love in return. This is also due to his somewhat childish idealism, which he still manages to hold onto even after everything has happened. Although he knows his life will not last much longer, he still believes wholeheartedly in the idea of a noble and heroic sacrifice and the ability to redeem others through his own actions, even though his sacrifice is still an act of running away from his problems. But he still clings to this ideal, as this is really the only thing keeping him going through his trials as a Master in the Holy Grail War.

Unfortunately, due to his status as a Berserker master, Kariya walks a thin line as far as his own sanity is concerned. While he manages to maintain a lucid outlook a good deal of the time, his temper smolders and flares like that of his Servant, and at times he can snap and become unpredictably violent and cruel. While fighting the other Masters at the beginning of the War, Kariya grins sadistically as he coldly commands his Servant to kill. Throughout the war, he becomes more and more unbalanced, and honestly attempts to kill Tokiomi when he confronts him at the Mion River. Later on, when Aoi confronts him at the Church after Kotomine sets him up to look like Tokiomi's killer, she accuses him of never having loved anyone, and he loses his temper and strangles her to death. This is clear evidence of how playing host to the Crest Worms as well as the stress of maintaining a Berserker class Servant have played hell with Kariya's mind.

Abilities: Kariya's prana is supplied by the Crest Worms that inhabit his body. Besides increasing the power of his Magic Circuits to levels capable of sustaining the manifestation of a Servant, he is also able to painfully summon them forth from his body to attack his opponents. The worms hatch into flying creatures called Blade Wing Worms, which are far stronger than their size would indicate, as they are capable of stripping flesh from bone with relative ease. He also possesses three Command Seals that mark him as a Master in the Fourth Holy Grail War, allowing him to contract with and control a Heroic Spirit as his Servant.
