Background: World information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drifters_(manga) Pre-Drifters history: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Butch_Cassidy (which he most likely get to keep, as several other character has been allowed to keep their original histories of how they lived and died – even if they don't actually die at those moments in Drifters.)
Butch arrive to the Drifters world alongside his friend and comrade the Sundance Kid. It is still unknown where they first arrived, but some time after, they are found by members of the Octobrist Organization, and brought to the North Wall of Carneades, which is the frontlines of the battle against the Blacklord and the Offscourings. As they wait for the Blacklord's army to arrive, Butch and Kid watch as the Octobrist, the Carneade soldiers and Scipio Africanus fight about who is to take command over the troops at the fort walls. Neither get into the argument, as they don't really get what all the fuss is about.
He is present at the start of the Blacklord's army's attack, and is on standby by a carriage that is loaded with different firearms. He and Kid considers ditching the people they're waiting for – Hannibal and Scipoio, that is – but the two arrive shortly after, and together with them, they make to leave the fort, by a request on Abe no Seimei's part. As they are in the middle of a battlefield, they have to fight their way through. They cut very close, and Butch is almost fried by a dragon. The dragon is shot down by the pilot Kanno Naoshi, who just recently fell in through a portal in the sky together with his WWII battle plane.
Some time later, they pick up Seimei and head for the location of the other Drifters – Shimazu Toyohisa, Oda Nobunaga and Nasu no Yoichi. On the way there, however, Scipio fall off the carriage and as they were followed by enemies, they didn't have the time to stop and pick him up.
The first time that Butch met the Drifters from the castle ruins (Toyohisa, Nobunaga and Yoichi, that is) was in the middle of another battle. Gilles de Rais and Jeanne d'Arc had, together with foot soldiers from the Blacklord's army, attacked the castle they are based at. The first they see is the battle between Yoichi and Gilles, just as Yoichi is being strangled by Gilles' chains. Using the last of their ammunition for the gatling gun, Kid blast Gilles to pieces – although Gilles turn to salt for some unknown reason.
Butch and Kid show and demonstrate their guns to Nobunaga, who is very interested in the weapons. Not that Butch get why Nobunaga is so excited over the gatling gun, nor does he understand the battle strategies that he is talking about. When Nobunaga tell him and Kid that they're making gunpowder, however, he get really excited over that, because they didn't know how to make gunpowder themselves.
He gave one of his guns to Nobunaga when he and the other Castle Ruin's Drifters were about to set out to free the dwarfs, and asked that once Nobunaga manage to get bullets manufactured, they leave some for him and Kid.
As for where Butch and them went after that, they left the ruins to find Scipio and to return to the Octobrist headquarters, acting like some sort of escorts to Seimei and Hannibal.
