Applications

• Please read over all the rules and information before applying in order to minimize any confusion before joining.

• If applying for a character that has already been dropped, it would be a good idea, though not required, to know something of their previous interactions. You are also free to pick up a dropped character with no memories of their previous time in Mayfield.

• All content for the personality and sample entry in your app must be written or roleplayed by you; for the personality section in particular, we do not accept copied text from wikis or other sources. Obviously, you may not copy your app from other players, whether in Mayfield or other games. Application plagiarism will result in a ban from the game.

• If you wish for your character to be placed in a specific house, please mention this in the relevant section of the application and specify that permission was obtained by the PCs already residing in that house. We will be operating by the Honor System for this, and there is no need for others to comment their permission in this post!

• Other special requests would also best go in the beginning of the application. Remember, grammar and spelling are important -- if your app contains errors, you will be asked to revise.

• Please post all applications or canon updates in this post; posting them elsewhere and linking to them from here may cause them to get changed later. Posting them here keeps us from having to save them.

When Applying, Fill Out the Following:

When Applying for an Original Character, Fill Out the Following

• Before applying, please look over any applications that were recently accepted to get an idea of what we're looking for.

• If you apply for a character that has already been reserved, we will inform you and ignore the application until the reserve runs out. You may not apply for more than two characters from the same canon. For the sample entry, you may write your own entry, or use a post from a musebox, dressing room, or other game. We recommend [community profile] testrun_box if you prefer the latter!

• After you're accepted, please follow all of the instructions given. You will need to reply to the acceptance, post your journal to the friend add page and your canon post, join the communities, and use the friend add page to update your journal. Once you're accepted, please introduce yourself on the community when you're ready to play.

• If your app is "Pending", do not freak out! This means that we need you to make some revisions, and does not mean you're rejected. We generally give players a chance to revise before rejecting them, but we will reject apps that do not address the concerns stated when we asked for a revision. If you have been rejected, our reply will clearly state this to be the case. If we have not gotten back to you yet, under no circumstance does this mean you are rejected. If it has been over a week since our last reply, it would be a good idea to contact us with a reminder, otherwise, please be patient!

• If you have received a "Pending" notice, you will have one week to supply us with your revisions, or your reserve will be considered expired and that someone else is free to apply for the character.

• The typical wait for a reply on apps may be anywhere from a day to a little over a week. If any part of your application requires a pending, it may be another week after your reply to that before we can get to you. We process a high volume of apps every round, so please be patient.

If you have not heard back on a pending for over a week after apps close, please send a PM directly to the mod account.

The Fair Lady | Dark Souls | Not Reserved, Call The Cops I Dare You

Name: BF
Personal Journal:
Contact Info: AIM: Blazing Folly, plurk @ blazingfool
Other Characters Played: Slick and John.
Preferred Housing: None!

Character Name: The Fair Lady/Quelaan of Izalith. "Quelaan" hasn't been officially canonized, but it's more or less been adopted by the fans; if/when she ever gets an official name, I'll change it.
Character Series: Dark Souls
Character Age: Ancient. Appears 17.
Background: IN THE BEGINNING the world was cold and dark, and ruled over by immortal stone dragons. The primitive peoples of the world were little better than godless savages, cowering in fear of the dark and the dragons.

But then came the First Flame: a primordial blaze that beat back the darkness and brought disparity into the world; light and dark, heat and cold, life and death. In the light of the First Flame glimmered 4 broken shards: fragments of an essence called the "Lord's Soul". Those fragments were discovered by 4 beings, drawn to their power: Gwyn, Lord of Sunlight; Gravelord Nito, the First of the Dead; the mysterious and unknown Furtive Pygmy; and the witch of chaos, Izalith. All 4 united against the dragons, and began a bloody war that would span decades- perhaps even centuries. While Gwyn had a regiment of loyal knights and Nito raised the dead themselves, Izalith had only her 7 daughters: powerful users of the ancient flame arts, whom she led into battle against the dragons. The youngest of the 7 was Quelaan, a frail girl who nevertheless fought alongside her mother and sisters.

With the defection of the traitor dragon, Seath, the 4 Lords achieved victory, and the Age of Fire began. The next few centuries were good; Nito and the Pygmy disappeared, but Gwyn and Izalith built up nations and allowed humanity to prosper. While Gwyn commanded the city of New Londo above, Witch Izalith built a city in her name far below the surface of the earth. The great city of Izalith was a prosperous place, where the witch and her daughters ruled alongside their human subjects. It was a good time.

And then the First Flame began to dim.

No flame lasts forever, and the First Flame was no exception. Prophecies foretold that when the Flame went out, the Age of Fire would end, and the Age of Dark would begin. The rule of the gods would come to a close, and humanity's fate would be left in humanity's own hands- for better or for worse. Being gods themselves, Gwyn and Izalith weren't really keen on that idea, so after they spoke on the matter, Izalith attempted to use her fire arts to re-create the First Flame anew.

This did not go well, to say the least.

Izalith was unable to control the Flame she created, and was consumed by it. It became an entity in itself: the Bed of Chaos, absorbing Izalith and all her powers, using them to birth the first demons into the land. The city of Izalith was consumed by chaos and lava, overrun with demons. Some, such as Quelaan's eldest sister Quelana, managed to escape the city before being tainted at all. Quelaan herself, and her older sister Quelaag, were not so lucky. While their other sisters were being consumed by the Bed, the two girls escaped to the surface- but not before being fused with beasts called Chaos Spiders from the waist down.

Yep. Fun times!

Despite their terrible transformation, the two sisters managed to escape to Blighttown, a shanty in the swamp below Anor Londo, and relayed the news of the disaster at Izalith to Gwyn. The king of the gods knew what he had to do: Gwyn distributed his power among his subjects, then departed with his most loyal knights for the Kiln of the First Flame to sacrifice himself there. This he did, keeping the Flame alive for centuries longer, but this did nothing to combat the growing spread of Chaos in the ruins of Izalith.

Bereft of their home and anyone who might help them, Quelaag and Quelaan lived a meager existence in the swamp, attempting to control their warped bodies. Being minor goddesses, they were able to adapt to the change well enough, and Quelaag used her newfound power to beat back the demons that had followed them to the surface. She and Quelaan made their home in a crumbling tower that lay between the Bell of Awakening above and the elevator to the Demon Ruins below, spinning massive webs to deter intruders.

The sisters traded often with the humans who still lived in the miserable shanty of Blighttown, and so it was that Quelaan heard of the terrible plague that afflicted them. The Blight, as it was known, left its victims alive for many weeks, but in extreme pain. As a Fire Keeper, Quelaan had some skill as a healer, and resolved to help the humans if she could; however, Quelaag expressly forbid it, ordering her to remain in their domain. For the first and only time in her life, Quelaan defied her sister, and went into Blighttown to heal the suffering. As it turned out, the only way to save the victims of the Blight was to suck the Blight-pus out of their bodies and accept it into their own. This Quelaan did, hoping that her status as a minor deity would protect her.

She was both right and wrong. Despite the pain and revulsion, Quelaan sucked the pus from every victim of the Blight- the first one saved being Eingyi, a heretical pyromancer who even the other swamp-dwellers hated. The effect of the pus very nearly killed her; as it stood, she was left alive, but blind, weakened, and in extreme pain. In a furious rage, Quelaag brought her back to their domain, ordering the humans Quelaan had saved to come with her and serve her. The humans did not even speak the same language as the sisters, but they- particularly Eingyi -served her as best they could. Quelaan began producing horrific spider eggs that pained her terribly; the only way they could be removed was for humans to allow them into their own bodies.

Over the next few centuries, Quelaag made a discovery: the only thing that could alleviate her sister's pain, however temporarily, was the crystal sprite called "Humanity", which could be harvested from humans themselves. Her sister's human servants began to "mysteriously disappear", until only Eingyi was left. The old man had become an Egg-Burdened, loyally allowing his body to be warped by Quelaan's eggs in order to ease her suffering, however minimally, and as such Quelaag suffered him to live. Quelaan, delirious and half-mad with pain and sickness, had only her sister to speak to; she did not even realize that Eingyi was there.

It was around this time that the first Undead began to appear in Lordran. Once again, the First Flame was fading, and the Darksign was beginning to spread: a cursed brand that marked its bearer as an immortal Undead, shunned and hated by the outside world. The Undead were corralled at the Undead Asylum, and those who managed to escape would find their way to Lordran, driven by their brands to enter the Kiln and face Gwyn. In order to get there, however, they would need to ring the Bells of Awakening, which would bring them right through Quelaag's domain...
daughterofchaos: (thank you quelaag)

Caring absolutely nothing for the fate of humanity or Lordran, Quelaag spent centuries using the Bell above her home as a means of luring Undead into her lair, killing them, and using their Humanity to ease Quelaan's pain. This cycle of events continued for many years, with Quelaan completely oblivious to the fact that her painkillers were bought with human lives... until the day finally came when Quelaag was slain. A particularly resourceful Undead (along with a bizarre practically-naked woman wearing a burlap sack on her head) managed to best Quelaag in battle, and harvested her soul upon her defeat. Curious, the Undead warrior poked around her lair and stumbled across the illusory entrance to Quelaan's chamber.

It is there that they meet her: the Fair Lady, still wracked with pain and sorrow. If the player holds the Old Witch's Ring, you find yourself able to speak her tongue, and realize the awful truth: because you hold Quelaag's Soul and speak her language, the blind Quelaan believes that you are Quelaag, the same sister you just killed. Now, only one question remains:

Won't you help the Fair Lady?

Personality: The Fair Lady is a martyr, through and through. Having already lived through the loss of her mother and sisters and the destruction of her city, she still found the courage to sacrifice herself for the sake of a race of people who she couldn't even speak to. If that ain't selflessness, I don't know what is. In contrast to her ruthless and conniving sister, Quelaan is a kind, compassionate, loving person who genuinely cares for humanity even after her terrible transformation.

One of her defining character traits is her optimism: despite her crippling pain, all of her conversations with "Quelaag" see her attempting to keep up a brave face for her sister's sake. Quelaan insists that the dozens of oozing pus-eggs along her body "don't hurt terribly", and begs "Quelaag" to take care of herself- after all, she couldn't live if anything happened to her dear sister! :]

That's actually probably a literal statement: without Quelaag to protect her, Quelaan would most likely be murdered by whichever Undead happened along. Having been entirely dependent on Quelaag to care for her over the past few centuries, Quelaan isn't the most self-sufficient person out there, but despite that she desperately wishes that she could be. One of her conversations with the player seems to imply that the Chosen Undead is weeping as they speak to her; upon realizing this, the Fair Lady begs "Quelaag" not to cry, insisting that she is happy as long as she has her sister. Quelaan is pretty much the kinda person who, upon being hit by a speeding truck, would immediately ask the driver if they were alright.

The long years of isolation and pain have left her more than a little crazy. No amount of talking to her will convince her that you are not in fact Quelaag; the Fair Lady has spent so long blind and in agony that she honestly believes any voice other than her sister's to be the result of a dream or hallucination. She has a fair amount of trouble remaining lucid, a problem that only increases with the amount of pain she happens to be in.

The fact that she's half-dead and all sweetness, however, doesn't mean that the Fair Lady is completely harmless. Let's not forget that for all her illness she is half-Chaos Spider, and that she once fought alongside her mother and sisters against an army of immortal, invincible dragons. Prior to her illness she was a capable wielder of fire magic, though she disliked harming anyone with it, preferring to cast simply for its own sake. Quelaan may be weak and frail now, but the only reason she ended up that way was because she was brave enough to sacrifice herself for complete strangers- not a feat that many could match. Even after everything she's endured, the Fair Lady yet lives, and if you have any heart at all, you'll give her the help she needs... one way or the other.

Abilities: Prior to her transformation, the Fair Lady was a wielder of the ancient fire arts; it's mentioned that the birth of the Bed caused the fire arts to warp into pyromancy, so it's fair to assume that if she were not ill, Quelaan would be capable of wielding the pyromancy spells found in-game. Like her sister, the lower half of her body is a massive, demonic spider; when her illness is regained, this spider pretty much appears to be dead. Without the Blight, though, it's very much alive- and hungry... :]

Sample Entry: [following the attack on the dairy...]

I, ah... I should like to make a request, if I may.

I know that it is selfish of me to ask, for I know that many of thee have been taken from thy homes against thy will, but... I should like it to be known that for some of us, this place... Mayfield... it is preferable to where we hail from. Mayhap that will not stop your efforts, but please... consider it, if nothing else.

[her voice lowers, almost inaudibly.] Is that so wrong of me to ask? Could not some of us be allowed to stay... even just a little while yet? I know I must return someday, I cannot leave Sister alone, but...

I had forgotten what it felt like to be alive.
