I have always found it odd to think that a soldier is intended to show allegiance to anything but his "work", to anything but his actual cause and love. A writer might sign contracts with publishers and an architect and engineers with companies, but these aren't allegiances. Merely work done for those who can benefit from their talents, because the true allegiance of these people is to their work.

So should it be, I think, with soldiers.
