Zombiefield Part II: Player Plot Planning Post
Mark your calendars, ladies and gentlemen, because the weekend of June 9th-11th is going to explode with everyone's favorite overused cliche horror film fare, zombies.
Like last year's Zombiefield, this one will start off due to a regain. Whose regain? Our very neighborly neighbor, Darth Vader.
Vader will be regaining a case of canisters from the Blackwing Project, containing something special. The Blackwing Project was a research project engineered at Darth Vader's behest shortly prior to the events of A New Hope. The end goal for the Empire was to create a bioweapon that could be used to pacify populations (read: slaughter them like cattle) and mobilize the infected like an army. I guess there's just some things clones won't do, like, uh, eat the enemy.
If you've read the Star Wars EU novel Death Troopers, you'd know that they kinda succeeded. Kinda.
The virus is stored in easily fuck-up-able canisters, and is itself airborne, attacking the respiratory system and then the major organs one after the next. Victims typically show infection with a raging fever and severe vomiting. Death occurs anywhere from within thirty minutes to a few hours.
Of course, this wouldn't be a zombie plot without the zombies. The virus reanimates the dead and they go on their merry way, with some extras.
See, the Empire wanted to be able to sway these things to do its bidding, and while we're never truly shown how they intended to accomplish that, what we do see is that they made smart zombies, holy Christ.
The zombies first and foremost are driven by raging hunger and the virus' urge to continue to spread and thrive. Pretty bog standard, but what makes them stand out is their sheer cunning. Though they can't speak, they retain some memories of their previous life, allowing them to mimic the living to lay traps, use complex weapons and machinery. Drive a car? Yep. Fly a plane? Oh hell yes. The zombies can also communicate with one another over a long distance via screaming shrilly in tandem, and will mass together sort of like a human centipede when they're not out and about killing everything in sight.
Vader will essentially Patient Zero for this event and will be falling ill on Friday night, but since this thing spreads super fast don't worry about having your character coming into contact with him. He'll be accidentally spreading it pretty far and fast. C:
BUT THERE IS HOPE!
See, in canon there are people with a natural immunity to the virus. It's from them that a vaccine is synthesized and successfully used* to treat others.
*Other humans, that is. The vaccine itself didn't do so hot when it was administered to a Wookie. They developed boils on the throat that had to be lanced and drained in order to keep them infection-free. If you play a non-human character, it's up to you which way you'd like to go if a vaccine is made. C: The options are yours for the taking.
Any of the science-y types in town are more than welcome to make a vaccine. Why the hell not, right?
One thing to keep in mind is that those who are immune to the airborne virus might still get infected if they happen to be bitten. It can be a bit of a crapshoot.
ETA: Also I had to reference this for a great question, so have some more info for those who get bitten:
The infection from a bite will appear on the skin as a greying mass racing for the lungs/central nervous system. What this means is you can stop it. In DT a doctor is able to stop it from spreading in a bite victim by making an incision and lancing/draining the pocket of tissue that the virus is making to travel through the body. It's quick, messy and painful for the victim, but it does the job.
Since the virus does slow decay in its host, waiting for them to fall apart isn't the greatest idea. Taking out the head...doesn't work all that great either, as the virus can still manipulate nerve endings without the brain's assistance. Total destruction of the corpse is the way to go. \o/
Because the virus in canon does die out once it gets too far from its production site, the same thing will happen in Mayfield (unless a vaccine beats it to the punch). By Monday evening the virus will burn itself out and we can all go back to normal.

I MEAN
Holy Sacraments and other things of some religious connotation that would turn zombies to dust from a canon of Our Vampires/Undead/Demons Are Different. Would those be effective, or destruction of the body by magical/physical means is the only way?

Healing magic can slow it temporarily in a living victim and has the chance to prevent the spread of the virus in someone who has been bitten. TMI - In the book a doctor is able to stop it from spreading in someone by making an abdominal incision and lancing/draining the pocket of tissue that the virus is making to travel its way up.
The infection from a bite will appear on the skin as a greying mass racing for the lungs/central nervous system, so get it fast with magic/physical means. /TMI The virus will just laugh off healing on a zombie.
And wind gusts won't help. :C

Han and Chewie were captured and imprisoned on the Imperial prison ship most of the action takes place on. They were put into solitary, found by the ship's doctor and immunized. They made their way to the Star Destroyer the prison ship had latched onto, fought off a bunch of zombies, disabled the destroyer's tractor beam and got the hell out of Dodge. They went on their merry way to recover the Falcon.
This all takes place before A New Hope btw, and Han finds out it was Vader who ordered the project after they find canisters of the virus and project notes on the Star Destroyer. Hope it helps! C:
